Books
- Andrews, Malcolm. (1999) Landscape and Western Art. Oxford. Oxford University Press.
See Critical Reflections.
- Barthes, Roland. (1977) Image—Music—Text. London. Fontana Press.
This discusses the phenomena of sound and image. I want my body of work to encompass a multi-media approach with the recording of interviews, film clips and videos. I have become interested in the idea of photography where there is no clear context. Similarly with music where this can be in response to an event but with no direct context. How would listeners react to Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima by Krzysztof Penderecki without the context of the work?
- Liesbrook, Heinz. (2010) Bernd & Hilla Becher: Coal Mines and Steel Mills. Munich. Schirmer/Mosel.
I want to develop my photography skills as these texts have been inspirational.
-
Becher, Bernhard. and Becher, Hilla. (2005) Basic Forms of Industrial Buildings. Munich. Schirmer/Mosel.
-
Anonymous Sculptures, Bernd and Hilla Becher
The photography shown is striking, and is something I would like to aspire to create.
- Ruscha, Edward. and Crow, Thomas E.. (2008) Ed Ruscha: Industrial Strength. Philadelphia. The Fabric Workshop and Museum.
I found this to be a very interesting book and something I am again considering. The piece itself being a 23 foot by 9 foot tapestry created at the Fabric Workshop Museum in Philadelphia. The book deals with the range of materials used by Ruscha and is both skilful and evocative.
- Miskell, Louise. (2019) New Perspectives on Welsh Industrial History. Wales. Gwasg Prifysgol Cymru.
Some interesting essays in providing background to the proposal.
-
Merleau-Ponty, Maurice. (1945) Phenomenology of Perception. Paris. Librairie Gallimard.
-
Morrill, Rebecca. (2023) Vitamin C+: collage in contemporary art. London. Phaidon Press.
I am interested in developing a piece which would have a tapestry/collage presentation on metal incorporating a Welsh quilt design as documented in a book by (Jones, 1997). Consideration to be given as to whether this is viable in a workshop with a group or school in South Wales.
- Key Words Preview: Raymond Williams and Working Class Writing, 2020
Williams (1921–1988) was a Welsh writer, academic and critic who was a key figure in the development of cultural studies and cultural materialism. Again, excellent background material in understanding the challenges and resilience requried.

Lewis, Roo. (2023) Port Talbot UFO Investigation Club. London. GOST Books.
One of my favourite books, which accompanied the exhibition I attended at the Photobook Cafe, London in September 2024.
Roo comments: “this is a vehicle I use to tell positive stories of the weird and wonderful—of those who remind us what it is to be human.” And, about the town of Port Talbot itself: “There is magic to this town—a romance in the history, the people, the rhythm, the folklore … My investigation has been about Welsh power and the drive to succeed.”
